Can a 20 year old diesel truck with nearly 400,000 km (250,000 mi) still be a reliable long distance tow rig? The goal is simple: build a reliable, comfortable and capable tow rig that can pull roughly 8,000–12,000 lbs across North America without spending new truck money.
In this first episode of the Budget Tow Rig Build Series, I introduce my 2006 Ford F-350 6.0L Power Stroke and the 28ft Haulmark enclosed trailer it spends most of its life pulling. I talk about what I paid for the setup, what it has cost me so far, and how that compares to buying new.
We also look at some of the real world issues I’ve run into while towing heavy, including coolant temps, reduced power, limp mode, suspension squat, hitch setup and the upgrades I think this truck needs to take it to the next level.
My used truck and trailer setup came in at roughly 75% less than a comparable new setup. Now the question is whether it can actually do the job reliably.
