There’s a clear difference between normal anger and bipolar-related anger during mood episodes. When I’m symptomatic, the reaction can be much more intense and out of proportion to what actually happened.

In Bipolar Disorder, anger can show up suddenly… sometimes without a clear trigger, or a small trigger can lead to a much bigger outburst than expected. This is part of why loved ones often describe feeling like they’re “walking on eggshells.”

Bipolar anger during mania or hypomania can also lead to impulsive or destructive behavior, and it can be harder to calm down from compared to typical emotional reactions.

One check I use is asking myself: would this normally bother me this much if I were in a stable mood? If the answer is no, that’s a sign to slow down and proceed with caution.
