Around 85% of people with Bipolar Disorder report heightened sensitivity to noise during mood episodes. This is something I often associate with manic or hypomanic states, where the brain becomes easily overstimulated by everyday sound.
When I’m elevated, normal auditory input can feel overwhelming… the ticking of a clock, background conversations, or even music I usually enjoy can feel sharp, intrusive, or physically intense. This isn’t simply “being sensitive” or overreacting… it’s part of how the brain can process sensory information differently during a bipolar episode.
This kind of overstimulation in mania can be one of the more overlooked warning signs of bipolar disorder, especially during early hypomania symptoms. Recognizing changes in sensory sensitivity can help identify when a manic episode may be developing.
For a deeper breakdown, I also have a video covering the science behind bipolar noise sensitivity.
