Description
Recently, I replayed “Bendy and the Ink Machine” only intending to play Chapter One to see if it worked better with my new graphics card. I had an issue after the latest QOL patch where entering the settings menu completely froze the screen and made the game unplayable. The graphics card switch worked, and it allowed me to finally play the game in its more functional state. Just for gits and shiggles, I set the screen resolution to 1440x1080, which essentially crops the game to 4:3.
Somehow, doing this made the game 100x more fun to play. The only thing that convinced me the game wasn’t meant to be played like this is the fact that the settings and menu UI remain in 16:9, as well as some text that gets cut off at certain points. What was meant to be a quick check to see how the game works with my updated system resulted in me playing through the entirety of the game again, just gawking at these beautiful environments I’d already seen a thousand times before.
“Bendy and the Ink Machine” has such a strong focus on environment design that, in spite of the walking simulator allegations, I’ve always compared the game to “walking through an art book”. Squashing the frame like this draws the player’s attention more towards the center, making the environments feel so much larger than in the base 16:9 aspect ratio, allowing you to take in just how beautiful these environments actually are.
The horror was amplified in this experience as well. For the first time ever, the Ink Demon’s Chapter 2 scare actually got me, because the squashed aspect ratio made him feel far closer than I was used to him being, making a moment I could normally do while goofing around a little something that genuinely had me shaking like it never had before. It truly felt like the definitive way to experience the game as it was.
So I wanted to share that with you all for this year's 414 Day. In an era where this game tends to get criticized for how scuffed it is, this video is intended to act as a "narrative-compliant" playthrough of the entirety of "Bendy and the Ink Machine" for anyone looking to jump into the inky world of Bendy.
This video also contains major spoilers for "Bendy and the Ink Machine".
