When sofas, chairs and mattresses reach the end of their life, recycling the foam inside has until now been a major challenge, causing billions of furniture items to end up in landfill every year.
To address this challenge, BASF and Vitra combined material science and design expertise to develop V-Foam, the first economically recyclable polyurethane foam. Unlike conventional foam, V-Foam is meltable – at the end of its life, it can be liquefied and reshaped into new foam through a specialized mechanical recycling process without losing its quality, comfort, durability, or feel. Together, BASF and Vitra show how materials can be built to last and designed to return – reimagining upholstery not as the end of a product story, but as the beginning of a continuous material loop.
