What happens when footage from inside Gaza challenges the narrative dominating social media?

In this video, I react to videos shared by Gazans showing restaurants, bakeries, food, businesses, and everyday activities, alongside clips of people discussing food shortages and humanitarian conditions. These videos raise questions about how Gaza is portrayed online, which footage gains visibility, and how social media shapes public perception of the war.

I also discuss a Gazan social media account that shares footage and commentary challenging Hamas and the dominant narratives surrounding Gaza. The video examines allegations of staged or scripted content, the role of Hamas in controlling information, and the difficulty of distinguishing individual clips from a complete picture of conditions on the ground.

We also explore the wider debate over famine claims, humanitarian aid, media coverage, and the use of terms such as “genocide” and “starvation” in political discourse. I compare the attention given to Gaza with the coverage of humanitarian crises elsewhere, including Sudan and Syria, and question why some suffering receives substantially more attention than other suffering.

Throughout the video, I share my perspective on the information war surrounding Israel and Gaza, the impact of viral footage, and the importance of questioning what we see online.

An important distinction: individual videos of people eating, visiting restaurants, or appearing healthy cannot establish whether a population is experiencing famine or widespread food insecurity. Likewise, footage of hardship alone cannot establish the full scale or cause of a crisis. The claims discussed in this video should be evaluated against reliable humanitarian reporting, independently verified evidence, and the broader situation on the ground.

What do you think about the role of social media in shaping the public's understanding of Gaza? Are people seeing the full picture, or are important parts of the story being overlooked?
