The Mozambican Civil War was a brutal conflict that lasted from 1977 to 1992, following Mozambique’s independence from Portugal in 1975. It was fought between the ruling party, FRELIMO, which had established a Marxist one-party state, and the rebel group RENAMO, which was created and supported by Rhodesia and later backed by apartheid South Africa. The war was marked by widespread violence against civilians, the use of child soldiers, destruction of infrastructure, and famine.
Over its 15 years, the war killed an estimated one million people and displaced nearly five million more, devastating Mozambique’s economy and society. The conflict finally ended with the signing of the Rome General Peace Accord in October 1992, paving the way for democratic elections and a fragile peace that has largely held, though tensions have occasionally resurfaced.
We entered Mozambique from Zimbabwe through the Espungabera border post, a small township nestled in the Mossurize District of Manica Province. Just 4 km (2.5 mi) from the border, Espungabera is a quiet gateway into central Mozambique. Our crossing followed a memorable visit to the enchanting Chirinda Forest in Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands—a rare 950-hectare tropical rainforest draped across the slopes of Mount Selinda, south of Chipinge.
From there, we made our way east to join the EN1, Mozambique’s main coastal highway, and began the journey south. One of the highlights along the route was crossing the iconic suspension bridge over the Save River. First inaugurated in 1972, this impressive structure has since been reinforced and restored. Today, it continues to stand as a symbol of resilience, offering a breathtaking view of the wide river valley as it carries light vehicles across.
Our first stop was Inhassoro, a small fishing port in the Inhassoro District of Inhambane Province in Mozambique. Next is the laid-back coastal town of Vilanculos, a true paradise and the gateway to the spectacular Bazaruto Archipelago. From there, we followed the coastline southward, discovering Mozambique’s charm one destination at a time. Golden beaches, warm turquoise waters, and vibrant towns welcomed us at every stop. We explored Inhambane with its colonial charm, relaxed on the long sandy shores of Xai-Xai, enjoyed the tranquil lagoon of Bilene, and saw many more coastal gems on the way to our final stop—Maputo, the lively capital city.
It was a journey filled with culture, scenery, and unforgettable seaside moments.
