Toyota unveiled a revived icon – the new 2026 FJ Cruiser.
The new SUV, renamed the Toyota FJ Cruiser, celebrated its world premiere. The first generation of the FJ Cruiser was unveiled almost 20 years ago. This "mini Land Cruiser" is designed in the rugged style of the latest-generation LC Prado J250. The car's sharp, cubic body shape gives it a rugged appearance. It features massive bumpers made of rough, unpainted plastic, classic, unpainted door handles, rugged wheels wrapped in knobby tires, and even two headlight options to choose from: rectangular headlights with a modern twist in the style of the LC Prado or round LEDs in the retro style of the old FJ Cruiser.
The interior is also extremely analog and minimalist. A multitude of mechanical keys, simple black plastic, a classic mechanical gearshift lever, black leather, and the same simple, square, chopped shapes as the exterior. Two digital displays—a virtual instrument cluster and a multimedia system screen—appear slightly out of place in this analog interior. The car also boasts the Toyota Safety Sense suite of electronic roadside assistance systems.
According to preliminary reports, production of the reborn SUV will begin in Thailand, at the same plant that produces the Toyota Hiluxe and Hiluxe Champ pickups. This is no coincidence: although the FJ Cruiser's design resembles the Prado, its technology and design are unified with those very same pickups in the Toyota Hiluxe line. The vehicle is also built on the IMV0 ladder-frame platform, while the higher-end Land Cruiser models are built on the new TNGA-F chassis.
Under the hood is a classic 2TR-FE naturally aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine. This well-known 2.7-liter engine produces 163 hp and 246 Nm of torque. This unit is also very familiar to Russian buyers, as it is the same engine installed in the very popular Land Cruiser Prado 150. Paired with this engine is a classic six-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
