This is a gentle educational ramble about language, motivation, control and agency. I've been thinking a bit about language lately and how it influences the way we think. I've noticed a habit that we often fall into and how this can be very limiting - when we have a prior commitment or need to make a decision, we may phrase it as "I can't do x because I have to do y." I talk about how that use of language can make us feel powerless, strip us of a sense of agency or control, and make us feel resentful, burdened and demotivated. Instead, I suggest we try to shift that phrasing to "Instead of doing x, I choose to do y because it is important to me." and identifying the reasons why we're making that decision. Doing so can help us to feel more motivated and more in control of our life, and better about ourselves.
