This is a gentle educational ramble about motivation, decision making and our perspective of time. I talk about three different 'selves', the anticipating self (looking to the future), the remembering self (thinking back on the past) and the experiencing self (experiencing the present moment) and how we often make decisions based on our present feelings and ignore the future consequences or benefits. I explore the concept of the present and how fleeting it is, talk about various aspects of psychology and how we can try to live a better life which balances our various selves more equally and beneficially. I also talk about how we can better connect with and empathise with our past and future selves, and I suggest some activities to help us feel more motivated to make future-oriented decisions by expressing gratitude to our past and future selves and appreciating our good decisions. An interesting article that talks about a related subject, time perspective therapy: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-time-cure/201607/the-importance-our-time-perspective
