Description
The rope screams — and then it snaps. Master shipwright Aldred has one heartbeat to save his apprentice as the king's great cog lurches off its slipway. And when he examines the failed wedge, he finds it was sawn halfway through on purpose. Somebody in his own yard wanted this ship to die before it ever touched water.
Follow Aldred from the torchlit keel inspection at 3 a.m., through the sawyers, caulkers and sailmakers of a medieval shipyard, to a noon deadline from the king's reeve, a whispered confession at sunset — and the evening tide launch that will decide whether a kingdom's war fleet sails, or a fraudster's green oak rots a king's ship from within.
