409. THIS is why your hand plane cuts crooked #makethings #mtbitesize

Make Things Guide 22 days ago

Description

You’ve trued up the bottom of your hand plane. The frog has been cleaned and seated properly. But when you make a pass, the plane only seems to cut on one side.

Before sharpening it again, check this switch-looking lever on top of the plane. This switch is called the lateral adjustment.

The blade edge should sit evenly across the mouth. But in the real world, a lot of micro problems can throw that off. One corner of the blade can stick out farther than the other, causing that side to cut deeper.

This is where the lateral adjustment comes in. It lets us shift the blade, just slightly, to iron things out.

But before using it, let’s make sure it actually works. With the blade removed, the lever should move smoothly from side to side. If it feels gritty or stuck, clean around the pivot and add a tiny drop of oil.

The tab at the bottom of the lever also needs to fit cleanly inside the slot of the blade. If that area is dirty, rusty, or rough, clean it up before putting everything back together.

Now sight down the sole to get the blade close, then take a light test pass. If the shaving only comes from one side, move the lateral adjustment a hair and test again.

When the shaving looks even, you’re good.

Just remember, this is for small corrections. If you have to crank it hard to one side, the lever isn’t the problem. Something else is still off.
