For years, I thought soldering worked like hot glue. If I'm soldering the end of a wire, I heat the wire up as hot as I can get it and the solder...well it's supposed to stick inside of the metal...right? You might only solder a few times in your life, but when you do, let me show you the little trick that finally made it click for me…finally.

Here's the part nobody explained to me. Wires act like little heat sinks...pulling the heat away from where you need it. And stranded wire makes this even worse. Instead of one solid piece of metal, you've got a bundle of tiny wires with microscopic gaps between them. Heat has to work its way from strand to strand before everything gets hot enough to melt solder.

Instead of expecting the wire to get hot through a tiny point of contact with the iron, we'll first create a little liquid jacuzzi on the tip. That molten solder wraps around the wire and transfers heat much faster. Once the wire gets hot enough, touch your solder to the wire...and watch it flow.Once the solder flows into the strands, you've just tinned the wire. The next connection becomes much easier because you've already done the hard part.

Just like a pilot hole makes a screw easier to drive, tinning makes the final connection easier to solder.
