For nearly a thousand years across most of Han Chinese society, the standard preparation for a girl's future was the deliberate breaking of her feet, a procedure begun before the bones hardened and sustained across years of tightening cloth until the foot had been compressed into a form that made normal walking impossible. This video examines what foot binding actually involved, based on archaeological evidence, the medical record, and the oral testimonies of the last generation of women who underwent it in the early twentieth century.
The bones tell the history precisely. The embroidered shoes that covered them were among the finest textile art the culture produced. T
he women who did the binding were often the former subjects of the same process, raising daughters in the only world they knew. And the girls who went through it are mostly accessible to us only in what they said about it decades later, filtered through everything that came after.
