“Like most of my songs, the lyrics kinda say it all, but with “Part of Life”, I guess the underlying message is a reminder that in a male dominated world, how important it is to remember to listen to our women.

The front half of the song touches on the journey of life and the struggles we face, the lessons we learn. The back half then drifts into this retrospective bubble or dream cloud,
with the sound of ancient whales and the wise words of the late Dr Jane Goodall as the figure of a strong feminine elder to sum it all up.

I’ve always marvelled at the way things can flow when it comes to the mysterious happenings related to the spirit of music.

For me the synergy around this song was strong. The events in my life, the song coming through me, Dr Jane’s final words before she died and then the final chapter of meeting the amazing and hilarious local animator, Jarrad Wright. I’d been watching some of his stuff and when I reached out to him about working on the video, he told me he’d just been watching a show featuring Jane Goodall and was pumped about the idea of this collaboration.

To me this is more than a song, it’s an art collaboration and I’m super proud of it. I hope people can relate to it in their own ways.” – Xavier Rudd

Keep ya chin up mate
There’s a lot to do
Plenty of shit like this
Is gonna happen to you
You gotta harden ya shell
It’s a part of life
One day you’ll have some kids
And a beautiful wife

And when she smiles at you
You’ll do all you can
To keep it together
Do your absolute best
Sometimes, it won’t be enough
And that’s just life

I know you’ve got some troubles
Stemming from your old man
But he probably did his best
With the tools that he had
And if it wasn’t enough
It is what it is
You can try to do better
When ya raise your own kids

The emptiness you’re feelin
Deep down inside
May never go away
At least it’s gonna take time
Ya gotta learn where to put it
It’s a part of life
Don’t let it wreak havoc
On the rest of your time

You were raised in a culture
Says “she’ll be right, mate”
You gotta push it all down inside
And shut the bloody gate
Sometimes, it’s gonna be tough
But that’s just life

Go out there and get it
Do what ya can
Hang out with some hippies
Maybe get yourself a van
Strip away the layers
Expand your mind
Identify ya weaknesses
Take that time

But don’t lose yourself
Or become obsessed
With your own healing journey
And sacrifice the rest
’Cause there’s people that love ya
Outside of your mind
And all we really have
Is that gift of time

By now those boys
Have forgotten your face
And I’ll never understand
Why you’d want it that way
Kids are only kids
For a very short time
From there they’ll keep you guessing
If they’ll want you in their life

If you’ve made mistakes
Don’t make ’em twice
Be sure to fight to keep
The little people in your life
So many stories through history
Of people who use
Unimaginable circumstances
Turn ’em into fuel

Good luck little mate
Have a good crack
Keep ya head down, ya bum up
And don’t look back
Do a bit of running
Or surfing just might
Help to clear the head in those times of strife

But there’s one more thing to say
Before I go
And I know it’s been said before
And it’s widely known
But love truly is the answer
It’s a part of life
It can heal the deepest wounds
And keep us inspired

Is karma real?
Nobody knows
But there’s just one more little thingI’d like to say before I go
Take good care of the planet
Treat it with respect
It will be there for your family
When you’re dead

It’s a part of life, it’s a part of life…

Dr Jane Goodall:

“I want to make sure that you all understand
That each and every one of you
Has a role to play…

And you are here for a reason
I want you to know
That whether or not you find that role you’re supposed to play
Your life does matter
And that every single day you live
You make a difference

We are part of the natural world
And even today when the planet is dark
There still is hope
Don’t lose hope.

I just hope that you understand
That this life on planet Earth isn’t the end
I believe, and now I know, that there is life beyond death
That consciousness survives…

I can’t tell you what you will find
When you leave planet Earth…

But I want you to know
That your life on planet Earth
Will make some difference
In the kind of life that you find after you die

We are part of Mother Nature
We have to do everything in our power
To make the world a better place
For the children alive today
And for those that will follow

You have it in your power to make a difference
Don’t give up
Do your best
While you’re still on this beautiful planet Earth”
