In 2004, Treyarch released Spider-Man 2 on the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube, completely revolutionizing the superhero genre with its physics-based open-world web-slinging. Naturally, PC gamers were seriously excited to get their hands on it.
But Activision pulled one of the most legendary bait-and-switches in gaming history. Instead of porting Treyarch's masterpiece, they secretly hired a developer called Fizz Factor to build an entirely different, heavily dumbed-down game specifically targeted at young children.
They stripped out the massive open-world freedom, replacing it with a static, educational-style point-and-click interface where players just clicked on floating spider-web shapes in the sky to move forward. Even the iconic train-stopping scene was completely ruined! Considering what PC gamers were expecting, it was an absolute kick in the nuts.
