At 50, Shuichi Yokota is considered one of Japan's younger farmers. And that's a problem.

Over the past 30 years, more than 200 ageing farmers have asked him to take over their rice fields. "Seeing people gradually leave the fields one by one, it makes me feel very lonely," says Yokota.

Across Japan, more than 250,000 hectares of farmland have been left uncultivated as fewer young people choose farming. But Yokota has one reason to stay hopeful. His eldest son has joined the family business, giving him hope that the land, and everything that's been built on it, will be passed on to another generation.
