Did you know *Gears of War* almost had a completely different title? In the early 2000s, Epic Games started building a class-based tactical shooter set in the *Unreal* universe called *Unreal Warfare*. But as development continued, they slowed the movement down, added a gritty cover system inspired by *Kill Switch*, and made the monsters terrifyingly dark. It diverged so much from the fast-paced *Unreal* arena style that sticking with the original brand felt wrong, so they shifted it to *Gears of War*—creating an Xbox 360 legend!
