Description
In this episode of Neglected Rights of Muslim Women, Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Safiyyah Ally examine Quran 24:31, one of the main verses cited in discussions about women’s dress and the niqab. Drawing on the scholarship of Abdel Halim Abu Shuqqah, they explore the meaning of the Arabic word "zina", which can refer to beauty, adornment, or ornaments, and consider why so much of the debate turns on how that single word is understood. They also examine the verse’s instruction for women to draw their head coverings over their necklines or chests, the differing interpretations attributed to early Muslim authorities, and Abu Shuqqah’s survey of major Quranic commentaries. They ask: if the verse never explicitly tells women to cover their faces, how did it come to be used as evidence that the niqab is required?
