Description
Were women’s public roles a modern development, or were they already part of the earliest Muslim community? In this episode of our Neglected Women’s Rights series, Dr. Shabir Ally Dr. Safiyyah Ally uncover striking accounts preserved in the Islamic tradition: Rufaidah nursing the wounded near the Prophet’s mosque, women supporting the community during battle, a woman encouraged to continue working in her orchard, and Umm Sharik opening her home to travellers. Drawing on Abd al-Halim Abu Shuqqah’s research, they explore how these once-visible examples were gradually overshadowed by later customs and restrictive ideas of piety, and what they reveal about women’s work, independence, and participation in early Islamic society.
