Adopted on July 4, 1776, the American Declaration of Independence formally announced the thirteen colonies' separation from Great Britain. Drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson, the document famously articulates the foundational principle that all individuals possess unalienable rights, including "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," and that governments derive their power directly from the consent of the governed. To justify breaking ties with the British Crown, it lists a series of specific grievances against King George III, accusing him of tyranny, unfair taxation, and violating the colonists' rights. Ultimately, the Declaration asserts that when a government becomes destructive of human rights, the people have a right to alter or abolish it, officially establishing the United States as a collection of free, independent states.
