Johnny Harris @johnnyharris explores the historical trauma and foreign exploitation that shaped modern Iran, explaining why its current regime is uniquely engineered to withstand both domestic uprisings and Western intervention. For nearly two centuries, imperial powers like Russia and Britain continually violated Iranian sovereignty, dividing the country into spheres of influence and executing a CIA-backed coup in 1953 to overthrow the democratically elected, oil-nationalizing Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh. This deep-seated humiliation and resentment toward foreign-controlled puppet leaders fueled Ayatollah Khomeini's anti-imperialist movement, culminating in the 1979 Islamic Revolution. In direct reaction to this history of outside meddling, the new regime established a highly institutionalized, "coup-proof" system overseen by a Supreme Leader and defended by multi-layered parallel forces like the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Consequently, while up to 80% of the Iranian public today opposes the brutal government, the regime's paranoid self-preservation design makes it exceptionally resilient against modern attempts by the U.S. and Israel to topple it.
