Western Province started their campaign with a 48-36 bonus-point win over the Lions in Cape Town on Saturday. Angelo Davids scored a hat trick of tries and Adre Smith, Chad Solomons, Hacjivah Dayimani and Deon Fourie also went over with Tim Swiel converting 4 times.
WP did concede 5 tries which gave the Lions a bonus point but they covered a handicap of around 3.5 points with plenty to spare.
Western Province remains in Cape Town to face the team who beat them in the semi-finals last season. They squeezed into the playoffs before losing 48-31 to the Bulls at Loftus and their 2 matchups with the Bulls in the regular season delivered a 48-24 win at Loftus (Bulls fielded a second-string side) and a 34-13 defeat in Cape Town.
The Bulls began their defence of the title with a 33-19 victory over the Pumas in wet conditions in Nelspruit on Friday night. The Bulls were subject of market support from punters and went off 6.5 point favourites, they led 11-3 at half time and never allowed the Pumas back in range.
Tries from Embrose Papier, Ruan Nortje, Johan Grobbelaar and WJ Steenkamp earned a bonus point and given they have a marginally better points difference than WP they topped the Round 1 standings.
