We Grew Up Poor... But I Finally Took My Mom on Her Dream Vacation

I wish I can tell you I was a big family boy growing up.. but that just wasn’t the case.. I was so embarrassed of my working mom, my broke preacher dad and our tiny apartment that we lived in..

I hated the feeling. The unfair feeling that while all the other kids got to have a proud normal home that they can confidently bring their friends over to.. I was so worried about what they’d think of the mold on our walls or the smell of our Korean foods that never left our apt.

And you guys can probably say wow what an ungrateful kid I was huh. My parents worked so hard just so I can complain. And to be honest you’re right.. I took my mom for granted. I used all her hard earned money to buy hollister and Abercrombie clothes so I can FEEL like I was worth more, and tried to live a fake elevated life.. and looking back it does sound silly.. but that was my reality.

But as an adult today.. I still carry parts of the shame still. I still hesitate when my friends ask if they can visit my childhood home in Missouri but the difference now is.. that I’m in a position of Perspective.

Yes I was embarrassed but because of this childhood I understand the sacrifice my parents had and the humility to know that life is NOT GIVEN to people. It’s worked for.

So before it’s too late. I’m taking a promise to myself as a MAN today to maximize what God has given me NOW so I can provide and protect my parents my future wife, my future kids.. cuz I will make sure the sweat my parents poured into me.. will not go to waste.

So I’m sorry. But thank you. And I love you mom and dad.

I will become the man you’ll be proud of 💛🌻
