We Drove Jaguar’s 1000HP Type 01 Prototype | evo India

Description

The Jaguar Type 01 — the all-electric Jaguar that broke the internet — is real. This is not the concept. This is the production-ready car under camouflage. And we drove it.

The Jaguar Type 01 makes over 1,000bhp from a tri-motor setup — two motors at the rear, one at the front — with torque vectoring that adjusts to the road surface 1,000 times a second. A 120kWh battery pack sits between the axles. Range is over 400 miles. The wheels are 23 inches. And Jaguar insists this is not trying to chase lap times — it is trying to feel like a Jaguar.
Their reference point for the Type 01's dynamic character is the XJC — a car from the 1970s. The brief was simple: always have power in reserve. Never feel like a hot rod. Never feel like a PlayStation. Feel like a gentleman's express. A big English castle made of stone and hundred-year-old timber, moving with complete confidence, needing no proof.

The seats are mounted below the battery pack — not on top of it like most EVs — so you sit nine to ten centimetres above the car's centre of gravity. The result is a low, connected driving position that no other electric car in this class currently offers. The body rolls slightly through corners — deliberately — because Jaguar's engineers decided a completely flat car feels disconnected. They call the first 50 metres of every drive the handshake. Tuning that handshake to feel like a Jaguar took months.

At 120kmph around the handling circuit the tyres were not even beginning to squeal. The brakes felt natural — not grabby, not artificial, just natural. And when the power arrives, it does not hit like a sledgehammer. It walks you along on a tidal wave of torque, stately and measured, with enough left in reserve that you never feel like you have reached the limit.
Jaguar says the Type 01 will polarise. They say that is the point.
