0:00 – Introduction
If you’re buying a mushroom supplement like lion’s mane, reishi, cordyceps, or tremella, there are three important things you should always check before purchasing.
Most people never look at them.
But these three factors can dramatically affect the quality, potency, and benefits of the supplement you’re taking.
Two mushroom products may look similar on the label, but one could be far more effective depending on how it’s made.
So let’s go through three things you should look for before buying a mushroom supplement.
0:40 – 1. Fruiting Body vs Mycelial Mass
The first thing to check is whether the supplement uses the fruiting body or mycelial mass.
The fruiting body is the actual mushroom that grows above ground. This is the part traditionally used in herbal medicine and contains important compounds like beta-glucans and polysaccharides.
Many popular medicinal mushrooms use the fruiting body, including:
• Lion’s Mane – often used for brain and nerve support
• Reishi – traditionally used for immune and stress balance
• Cordyceps – associated with energy and endurance
• Tremella – known for skin hydration and antioxidant support
However, some supplements use mycelial mass, which is the root-like structure of the mushroom.
The issue is that mycelium is often grown on grain, such as rice or oats, and the final product can contain a significant amount of that grain.
That means you may be getting less actual mushroom and more filler.
So ideally, look for supplements that clearly state “fruiting body.”
3:00 – 2. Powder vs Extract
The second thing to look at is how the mushroom was processed.
Some supplements are simply dried mushrooms ground into powder.
The challenge is that mushrooms contain chitin, a tough structure in their cell walls that can make their beneficial compounds harder for our bodies to access.
That’s why many higher-quality products use extraction.
Extraction helps break down the mushroom cell walls so the beneficial compounds become more bioavailable.
There are typically three types:
Water Extract – pulls out compounds like beta-glucans.
Alcohol Extract – pulls out compounds like triterpenes, which are especially important in mushrooms like reishi.
Dual Extract – uses both water and alcohol to capture a wider spectrum of compounds.
Many premium mushroom supplements use dual extraction for this reason.
5:40 – 3. Extract Ratio
The third thing to check is the extract ratio.
This tells you how concentrated the mushroom extract is.
For example:
2:1 extract means two pounds of mushrooms were used to create one pound of extract.
5:1 extract means five pounds of mushrooms were used.
10:1 extract means ten pounds of mushrooms were concentrated into one pound of extract.
Generally speaking, a higher ratio indicates a more concentrated product.
When comparing supplements containing lion’s mane, reishi, cordyceps, or tremella, the extract ratio can help you understand the strength of the formula.
7:40 – Recap
Before buying a mushroom supplement, remember these three things:
1. Look for fruiting body mushrooms rather than mycelial mass.
2. Check whether it’s a crude powder or an extract, ideally a dual extract.
3. Look at the extract ratio to understand how concentrated the product is.
These simple checks can help you choose a higher-quality mushroom supplement and avoid products that may be less potent.
