In an attempt to re-arrest the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, there was a clash between officials of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Correctional Services at the premises of the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Emefiele had been charged to court by the Attorney General of the Federation under the Ministry of Justice, facing a two-count charge of illegal possession of firearms. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, and Justice Nicholas Oweibo granted him bail in the sum of twenty million naira, requiring one surety of the same amount.
The court scheduled the trial to commence on November 14, and in the meantime, ordered the defendant to be remanded in the correctional service until his bail was perfected.
After the court proceedings adjourned, Emefiele remained in the courtroom for several hours. The court environment was tense, with armed men from the DSS positioned at the entrance where the defendant was arraigned.
When an official from the Nigerian Correctional Service tried to take custody of Emefiele as per the court's order, DSS officials resisted the move. The DSS officials brandished their guns, pushing the senior correctional service official, thereby preventing him from taking custody of the suspended central bank governor.
As of the time of reporting, Emefiele is still inside the courtroom, and the Prison Squadron Commander and his team have withdrawn from the court's vicinity. -
