I took the survival knife I bought at Harbor Freight for $9 and upgraded it into a pretty decent fire starter kit.
You can split and baton wood with it, and I packed several different fire starting options in the handle and made the compartment water proof.
The handle holds a bic lighter, strike anywhere matches, cotton tinder, waxed line, a pencil sharpener (for whittling branches for kindling) and a magnifying lens to start a fire using the sun.
