Patrick Lancaster is in the heart of the Russian-Ukrainian war, at the Progress mine administration building. This mine is a key enterprise in the Donbas coal basin, which until 2013 played a significant role in Ukraine's coal industry, making it the third-largest coal producer in Europe.
Today, it is a war zone, and Ukraine no longer controls this territory. Most of the Donbas basin, including the Donetsk coal fields, which were considered the "heart of Russia" in the early 20th century, is now under new management.
In this report, we will talk with representatives of the mine administration about the current situation and how things have changed since 2013, when it was part of the Ukrainian coal system. We will trace the transformation of the region from 2013 to 2014, when it separated from Ukraine, and how the situation changed in 2022, when it became part of Russia under Russian law.
