Trump pushes for the Save Act in unhinged primetime address

In a primetime address on Thursday night, President Trump once again made a desperate plea that Congress pass the Save America Act.

"The only reason you wouldn't do it is you want to cheat because your policies are so bad," he said. "Your candidates are so pathetic that you can't get away or can't get elected any other way."

In June, Trump cancelled signing a significant bipartisan bill focused on affordable housing, refusing to move until Congress passes the bill.

The centerpiece of the bill remains a requirement that voters show proof of US citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, to register to vote.

Nine percent of American citizens, roughly 21 million people, don’t have ready access to citizenship documents, according to a study by the Brennan Center and other voting rights groups.

Voting rights advocates describe it as quite possibly the worst voter suppression bill ever seriously considered by Congress.
