Training Future Pharmacists

Description

Pharmacists are medication experts who play an important role in the care team in hospitals, clinics, and other health care settings.

“From the ICU, the inpatient pharmacy, the dispensing pharmacy here, all the way out into our clinics. We have pharmacists who are meeting patients as part of their annual wellness events. We have pharmacists that manage diabetes care and anticoagulation. We've got pharmacists in specialty pharmacy and embedded in our specialty clinics who are there helping the doctors prescribe and get access to medications for their patients,” said Bryan Brubaker, pharmacy residency program director.

As Lee Health and Southwest Florida continue to grow, the need for qualified pharmacists is growing too.

“We continue to grow dramatically every year. In the last ten years, we've gone from about 180 total pharmacy employees to over 450,” Brubaker said.

To help meet that demand, Lee Health offers a pharmacy residency program for newly graduated pharmacists.

The program gives residents hands-on experience inside the health system while helping them build the clinical skills needed to care for patients.

“The pharmacy residency is an opportunity for newly graduated pharmacists to come to our health system and learn how to practice within the bounds of our health system, so we teach them the clinical expertise that they need to be successful as a clinical pharmacist,” Brubaker said.

About half of Lee Health’s pharmacy residents stay on to work full time with the organization, helping build a local pipeline of pharmacists trained to support patients throughout the community.
