High in the remote mountains of Bhutan lives one of the rarest, most valuable organisms on Earth: Cordyceps sinensis (locally known as Yarsagumba, or the "Himalayan Gold").
Part caterpillar, part fungus, this bizarre organism infects subterranean larvae before sprouting a solitary stem through the alpine soil. Ounce for ounce, high-grade cordyceps can be worth more than gold—driving high-altitude foragers up into the thin Himalayan air every single season.
In this expedition, I journey deep into the remote highlands of Bhutan to meet the semi-nomadic Layap people, brave the elevation, and see firsthand what it takes to find the world’s most expensive "zombie fungus."
