In life, Harburg was a prolific lyricist who also wrote the words to "It's Only a Paper Moon" and other hits from the 1930s and 40s. He, like many 'Great American Songbook' hall-of-famers, was also an atheist. Harburg was later blacklisted from Hollywood during the Red Scare for his progressive political views and beliefs, but his work remains relevant to this day.
