Texas teachers Gigi Cervantes and Johnnie D. Cotton left their jobs after Texas's new Ten Commandments law — forcing teachers to display Christian doctrine in public schools — went into effect.
For their commitment to their students' rights over their careers, Cervantes and Cotton won this year's Civil Rights Heroine and Hero awards, respectively.
