The Queue is News24’s series of mayoral town halls with a difference. In each episode, one mayoral candidate sits down with residents of Johannesburg, Tshwane or Ekurhuleni who are open to changing their vote. There’s no stage and no crowd, just their questions, one resident at a time. Nine candidates, three metros, ahead of the local government elections on 4 November.

In this episode, the EFF’s Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, a former speaker of the Ekurhuleni council, faces residents. They ask about corruption in the metro police, jobs for comrades and the killing of women. Tuck shops and RDP housing come up too. She wants every city worker vetted, and pledges to insource workers and scrap the tender system. She says solar streetlights and regular grass-cutting will make the streets safer for women.
