A massive federal class-action lawsuit (Garciaguirre v. Samsung) was just filed in California against the "Big Three" memory giants—Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron!
The lawsuit accuses them of using the massive AI boom and a shift to HBM (High-Bandwidth Memory) as a "cover story" to deliberately throttle production on ordinary DDR3 and DDR4 consumer RAM.
The plaintiffs claim this artificial shortage jacked up consumer RAM prices by up to 700% over the last four years!
Because these three companies control roughly 90% of the entire global DRAM market, everyday consumers have been stuck paying inflated prices on everything from custom PC builds to Apple Macs and Xboxes.
What makes it wild? This isn't their first rodeo—the lawsuit explicitly points back to 2005, when Samsung and SK Hynix pleaded guilty to criminal price-fixing charges brought by the US Department of Justice.
