Nobody saw the punch. Nobody could explain the knockdown. And to this day — nobody agrees on what really happened.
May 25th, 1965. Lewiston, Maine. A tiny arena — just 2,434 fans — packed to watch the most anticipated rematch in boxing history.
Sonny Liston — feared by everyone. A destroyer. Many believed no man alive could beat him.
Muhammad Ali enters. 23 years old. Reigning champion. The arena is electric.
The bell rings. First round. Both fighters circling. The crowd barely settles.
Then — barely one minute in — Liston goes down. The crowd goes completely silent.
Ali stands over him — screaming. 'Get up! Get up and fight!' The referee doesn't know what to do.
The referee is confused — he never properly started the count. The chaos is total. Ali wins by knockout. But nobody believes it.
Slow-motion footage later showed Ali did land a punch — a short right hand, fast and tight. But Liston's collapse looked far too dramatic for the contact made.
The conspiracy theories never died. And the image of Ali standing over Liston became one of the most iconic photographs in sports history.
