In this episode of Minutes With, forensic psychologist Dr Eric Hickey shares what he has learned from decades spent studying and interviewing some of the world’s most notorious serial killers.
Dr Hickey reflects on his interview with the I-5 Killer, Randy Woodfield, and explains how offenders use fear, control, narcissism and manipulation. He also discusses his involvement in the Unabomber investigation and reveals how a chance meeting led him to speak with members of Jeffrey Dahmer’s family, helping him better understand the psychology behind Dahmer’s crimes.
Rather than sensationalising serial murder, Dr Hickey examines the role of childhood trauma, failed relationships, attachment, fantasy, biology and environment. He explains the differences between psychopaths and sociopaths, why some offenders appear to feel remorse, and why understanding violent behaviour is essential for prevention, intervention and criminal investigations.
