This video series, “Mainely Resilient: How Maine Farmers Stay Profitable,” highlights Maine farms using U.S. Department of Agriculture programs to manage farm risk.
In this video, Chris Howard, University of Maine Cooperative Extension, speaks with Jim Buckle and Hannah Hamilton, co-owners of The Buckle Farm in Unity, Maine. Buckle and Hamilton discuss using Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program insurance to strengthen their business.
They also highlight:
- Establishing a good relationship with the USDA
- Keeping good records and developing their own system
- Reporting acreage to the USDA
- Planning for fluctuating cash flow
- Networking with experienced farmers and agricultural service providers
