Today, on June 15th, we celebrate the birth of Edvard Grieg (1843–1907), Norway's most renowned composer and one of the defining musical voices of the Romantic era. In honor of his birthday, this collection presents two of his most cherished achievements: the intimate and poetic Lyric Pieces for piano, alongside his three magnificent Violin Sonatas, works that showcase the remarkable breadth of his musical imagination unmistakable Nordic character and enduring legacy.
The Lyric Pieces are a series of short piano miniatures composed throughout much of his life. From the delicate simplicity of Arietta to the sparkling Butterfly, the nostalgic To the Spring, and the expressive Melancholy, these pieces capture a remarkable range of moods and poetic imagery.
The three Violin Sonatas trace Grieg's artistic development over nearly two decades. The youthful First Sonata radiates freshness and optimism, the Second Sonata embraces Norwegian folk influences with greater confidence, while the powerful Third Sonata stands as one of the great Romantic violin sonatas, combining dramatic intensity with soaring lyricism.
