From the Cimbri and Teutons to the Goths, Franks and Saxons, more than 70 Germanic tribes shaped the history of the continent for over a thousand years.
This 4K documentary tells their full story: their origins between the Baltic Sea and the Alps, their daily life in long houses and small villages, their pagan beliefs in Odin, Thor and Freya, and the mysterious seeresses who guided entire tribes. It follows their wars against the Roman Empire — from the Battle of Arausio to the legendary defeat of three Roman legions in the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD — and explains why Rome eventually retreated behind the Limes.
When the Huns invaded Europe in 375 AD, the Germanic peoples set out on the Great Migration that would bring down the Western Roman Empire. The Franks, Goths, Vandals, Angles and Saxons spread across the continent, founding new kingdoms from Britain to North Africa. Under Clovis and later Charlemagne, the Frankish Empire laid the foundations of modern France, Germany and much of Europe.
Their legacy lives on today — in our languages, our weekdays (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday), the names of regions like Bavaria, Hesse and Swabia, and even in modern pop culture from Tolkien's Middle-earth to Marvel's Thor.
