Hytale is a sandbox game developed by Hypixel. From being acquired by Riot Games, cancelled after half a decade, and revived by someone who wouldn't give up, this is one of the craziest development stories.

Hypixel was created by Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette.

They were Minecraft modders and YouTubers best known for games like Bed Wars, Skyward, and Murder Mystery. The pair would create their own minigames and upload them to YouTube. Within a few years, they were running their own Minecraft modding empire, but all that changed when Mojang updated the EULA and made it harder for content creators to be profitable.

That’s when they decided to make Hytale. Their own game, their own rules. Hytale would be a block-building RPG similar to Minecraft, but with a more fantastic, darker tone. In 2018, the developers released an announcement trailer, which quickly accrued more than 31M views. The trailer caught the attention of Riot Games, which announced it would purchase Hypixel Inc. in 2020 and fund the game’s development.

What had sounded like a dream scenario slowly turned into a nightmare of mismanagement as 6 years passed with no release date in sight.

Come with us as we explore the tumultuous story surrounding one of the most highly anticipated block-building RPG game releases in recent memory.
