BASF’s InVigor canola brand is marking 30 years in the Canadian market, a milestone that reflects not only advances in hybrid breeding but also the evolution of canola production across Western Canada. In this episode of the Canola PODcast, Shaun Haney sits down with Blaine Woycheshin, InVigor marketing manager at BASF, to reflect on the brand’s early years, the challenges of grower adoption, and where canola genetics are headed next.
Woycheshin, who has spent nearly three decades working with InVigor, recalls that early Invigor hybrid canola faced stiff competition from established Roundup Ready varieties. While Manitoba growers adopted hybrids relatively quickly, wider acceptance took time as BASF demonstrated the yield advantages and consistency of hybrid genetics. “InVigor was built on a promise,” Woycheshin says, describing the brand’s long-standing focus on delivering reliable performance backed by breeding, seed production, logistics, and customer support.
The conversation also looks at how canola breeding has evolved beyond simply increasing yield. Disease resistance, pod shatter tolerance, earlier maturity, and regional adaptation have become increasingly important as growers face challenges from clubroot, blackleg, verticillium, and changing weather patterns. Woycheshin says future innovation will continue to focus on helping growers manage these pressures while maintaining profitability.
Looking ahead, BASF is preparing to introduce several new hybrids and continues to invest in next-generation traits, including its planned InVigor Gold platform. For Woycheshin, however, the foundation of the brand’s success remains unchanged: listening to growers and continually adapting to meet their evolving needs.
