It's time to unbox the new Commodore 64 Ultimate! 📦 I know somebody who was involved in the project, so I called up my friend Cris Blyth, who popped across from California to open it with me. He worked on the packaging, so he showed me every little detail, from the "Welcome back to the world of friendly computing" box to where the C= logo moved to. Then we plugged it in, set it to full HD and went straight for the music.
The SID chip was never just a sound chip: it was three channels of a proper synth inside a home computer, and this one has eight SIDs built into the FPGA plus two slots for real ones. 🎹 So we took Rob Hubbard's Commando, the soundtrack of my youth, and pulled it apart. A little program splits the three voices so you can mute, solo and see each one, and it worked first time. Rob Hubbard, we love you. 🎧
