The Arab Golden Age was one of the most influential periods in world history – yet it remains largely forgotten in the West. From the 8th to the 13th century, the Arab Empire stretched from Spain to the borders of China, larger than Rome at its peak.
In its capital Baghdad, Caliph Al-Mamun founded the House of Wisdom, where Muslim, Christian, and Jewish scholars translated and expanded the knowledge of the ancient Greeks, Persians, and Indians. This documentary explores the rise of Islam under the Prophet Muhammad, the rapid Arab conquests across three continents, and the scientific revolution that followed in Baghdad and Moorish Spain.
Discover how Persian mathematician Al-Khwarizmi invented algebra and gave us the word "algorithm", how surgeon Al-Zahrawi (Abulcasis) pioneered modern surgery in Córdoba, and how the musician Ziryab transformed European fashion, dining, and music – including the invention of the guitar.
Without the Arab world, there would be no algebra, no decimal system, no Arabic numerals, no modern medicine as we know it.
