People have been making, looking at, collecting and protecting art for centuries. And the Smithsonian as a whole has collected countless pieces of art since its founding in 1846. But why would the National Air and Space Museum known for its collection of airplanes and spacecraft be home to an art collection? Follow along as Marty and Beth explore the importance of collecting, preserving and making art.

On Air is made possible by the generous support of Amazon, Boeing and the Hexcel Foundation.

This video is part of the National Air and Space Museum’s monthly theme, Art . Be sure to check out the other videos in this collection.
