Terbang Terakhir Bareng Ariq
I have befriended Muhammad Imamul Ariq since 2014, through our educational trip in Turkey. Since then it has been a joyful brotherhood, including when we reconnected in Poland in 2019. To his friends and me, Ariq brought only good vibes and cheerfulness. We never heard him complain at all.
Two months ago, in Oct. 2020, Ariq fell ill. At the hospital, he was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. Upon a medical operation, Ariq showed recovery signs. We all believed we could have fun again. However, to everyone's surprise, Ariq's condition deteriorated. He was unconscious and needed to be sedated. He was put on a breathing machine and his blood circulation was supported by the infusion of pressor amines. He was in a coma for a month.
The hospital released a letter to urge his family to come to Poland. Mr. Ratmil, Ariq's father, came to Krakow with the help of the Embassy of Indonesia in Poland. Sadly, Ariq was still unconscious when his father stood by his side.
On Dec. 12, 2020, Ariq gave his last breath. I had no idea how to tell Mr. Ratmil about this devastating news. I lost my words when he hugged me with tears and said “Please forgive all of my son’s mistakes if there’s any. He is in a better place now. Stay strong."
Since Ariq had to undergo intensive care in the hospital, his close friends and I talked intensively about how to cover the medical bill. We started a crowdfunding initiative, we saw how Ariq's kindness and helpfulness were returned with overflowing donations, many from unknown people.
However, it turned out that the funeral agency couldn't able to send Ariq's body from Krakow to Padang. We were grateful when the President Director of Garuda Indonesia Mr. Irfan Setiaputra personally offered the solution by arranging the return flight from Garuda. We could never thank you enough for this timely help.
I was also grateful to get full support from Ariq's close friends, my university which allowed me to skip classes and to reschedule my examination, a few psychologist mentors, a well-experienced flight doctor since 1984, a few honorable consultants, Indonesian Embassy Officials, Honorary Consul of RI, our ambassador H.E Ms. Siti Nugraha Mauludiah Mr. Micky from Garuda Indonesia as well as Ariq’s family.
We surpassed our crowdfunding goal. We aimed for EUR 12,000 and good people around us had donated more than EUR 14,000.
I’m humbled and grateful for such a massive collaboration, on behalf of the late Ariq, I would like to express my endless gratitude for all of your help, you are making the world a better place.
