Stan Winston Studio created a variety of demonic (and heavenly) characters for Constantine (2005), directed by Francis Lawrence and adapted from the 1985 DC and Vertigo horror comic Hellblazer, including demons, demon-possessed victims, and a winged angel.
Stan Winston Studio designed both the scavenger and the seplavite demons in the computer. The designs were then realized in the real world as computer-milled sculptures.
Although the flying seplavite would be brought to life via CGI, the scavenger demon was a fully articulated puppet with a radio-controlled face, jaw mechanisms, and cable-controlled fingers, operated on set by six puppeteers.
In this #minilesson and behind-the-scenes video, master character effects mechanical designer Richard Landon explains how the cable-controlled tentacle mechanism was used as a neck mechanism for Constantine’s scavenger demon, who awaited John Constantine in Hell.
Furthermore, he explains one of the deleted scenes, featuring a “half-breed” succubus with a tail and bloopers with actor Keanu Reeves.
