Social support explains female dominance in the spotted hyena – Video Abstract

What makes one individual or sex dominant over another? Scientists found that dominance relationships in spotted hyenas are determined by the amount of social support hyena can rely on. Females dominate males because most males are immigrants which lost social support when they left their natal group.
