At Bankstown Aerodrome near Sydney, members of the Sydney Soaring Club prepare one of their British-built Gull sailplanes for flight in this fascinating 1949 Australian Diary newsreel. Carefully assembled from its trailer and readied for launch, the lightweight glider demonstrates why Australia's vast open spaces and favourable thermal conditions made the country ideal for the growing sport of soaring.
The film follows the sailplane from the ground to the air, revealing the technology and techniques behind post-war gliding.
